GOPIO Sydney kicked off the holiday season with a special Diwali celebration on 12th of November, 2012 called- “Love, Peace and Joy”. The hot weather could not dampen anyone’s spirit of generously donating for Twisha Makwana, a little 18 months old girl living in Sydney and only child to her single and struggling mother. Twisha is born with a very rare birth defect- LGOA means she is born with an incomplete Esophagus (a tube connecting mouth and stomach) hence unable to eat/feed by mouth since birth. To live a normal life even after 20 major surgical procedures, she needs to go to USA for her further medical treatments. GOPIO Sydney believes that Diwali should not be a season of commercialism but rather of good values, sacrifice for the common good, love for others and sharing of blessings.

The Diwali dinner was attended by the consul general of India in Sydney, Hon. Arun Kumar Goyal, GOPIO family members, media and friends. After the teeka ceremony, The President of GOPIO Sydney Mrs. Lucky Singh welcomed everyone present there and before the celebrations started she asked everyone to pay one minute silence in memory of the consul general of Melbourne Mr.S.K. Behera who passéd away 2 days before with heart attack.  Then she gave Diwali wishes to all present there.  She said, “Besides celebration, we are here for a reason, for a good cause. Today we also want a fundraising for Twisha Makwana, Let’s help her and extend support for raising funds to pay her expensive medical treatment.”

The consul general was presented with a bouquet by little children dressed in Indian costumes. Arun Kumar ji conveyed diwali greetings to all present there and all GOPIO families were given Diwali gifts by the consul general.

People enjoyed Tambola and the raffle draws were sponsored by Minto Cellars, Thomas and Naaz co, Milan Bazaar and Balbir Singh.
